Advice for noobs on learning how to set up these various blocks?

Saw your comment on another site. I understand the general concept of what you are referring to in this post, and the most I've ever done is to block ip addresses in my .htaccess file.

Where would a noob like me go to learn (without hours of reading) the basics of "how-to" to go about applying what you all are talking about here. Is this something I'd do in my .htaccess file? I not a programmer, so I'd need some pretty noobish instructions.

I put alot volunteer hours into non-profit websites and these crappy bots and crwalers constantly put stuff on sites, register fake users, etc... How can I begin learning to wage war against all this?
